In my daily devotions, I have been reading about Joseph. Favour was always on him. Favour with his father and God. However, even though favour was on him, he still experiences extremely challenging situations. Obviously, the Bible does not go into a lot of detail about his responses to different situations, but I can speculate from the information that I am given that he trusted God and did not do anything rash. He was accused of attacking the wife of his master, which was completely the opposite of what was happening. I see no reference to the fact that he felt justified to do something to harm others or even defend himself, when he likely would not have been believed. It seems like he took the unjust punishment and sought the Lord’s plan in all of it. I really like how The Message Bible states the last part of Genesis 39:23, “Whatever he did God made sure it worked out for the best.” To me, jail does not seem like the best. Being sold by your brothers does not seem like the best. Whatever situation we find ourselves in, we need to be looking for God’s best. Not looking at the worst in it. So often we think, “Why is this happening to me?” I am guilty of that for sure. I need to have Joseph-like thinking. Not whining and complaining, but trusting that God will work it out for the best and doing my part to make sure that happens.
